Interview with Symone Hardy

"Symone Hardy (artist name: Sym) is a Baltimore native multimedia artist who manipulates simple images and revamps them into abstract artwork. After graduating from Morgan State University in 2017, she combines her photographs and forms them into a bigger composition. The inspiration for her artwork stems from the abstraction of emotions and memories within her life."

What is your creative practice?

I am a multimedia artist with a concentration in illustration.

Where do you believe humans come from?

Humans come from an atom particle that continued to grow until a human body was formed with skin, feelings, and a mind to think.

How do you deal with insecurity as an artist?

I reassure myself that I will be the greatest and I will never let myself down because when I did, it wasn't the best me that I could give to the world.

What do you do to keep your confidence up?

I speak to close friends and family members that see the vision with me.

The people who want me to succeed keep my hope alive.

What is your main motivation in life?

My motivation in life now is my brother;

he was one of my biggest supporters in life, and now I dedicate everything I do for him.

What is your biggest fear as a person first, then as an artist?

My biggest fear is burning myself out trying to do the thousands of ideas I have running in my head.

My biggest fear as an artist is not having an impact on the younger generations that are looking at my work for clarity.

I don't want to lose my creativity that made me who I am today to make someone else happy.

What practices do you have to maintain a sense of joy in difficult circumstances?

I work out in the gym or sleep to get rid of my frustrations.

So far, it has worked, but when it doesn't, I will go to a rage room and break some stuff to make me feel better.

Do you have the drive to do more/be more?

I have the drive to do more and be more, especially with the ideas I have in my head.

One could be the next revolutionary idea; I just need the chance.

Where does that feeling come from?

My insecurities motivated me to not do a lot in my childhood because I was afraid of being judged.

Once I got older and matured, I knew that negative thinking had to stop in order for me to be where I want to go.

I have the potential; I just have to tap into it.
